A winery in the middle of the steppe


Frumushika-Nova is both a winery and a name of a village in Bessarabia, in the middle of Europe’s largest steppe, an area of 23,000 ha. Once a Rumanian village which was destroyed in 1946 by Soviet authorities, it is now finally regaining its true potential.

In 2006 Alexander Palariev, father of current winemaker Vladimir, began constructing Frumushika-Nova winery with a rural tourism centre attached, reviving historical local craftsmanship traditions. The new centre was built on the destroyed village.

Unique terroir

“A rare climate, a rich history, a mixture of cultures and tastes makes Ukrainian Bessarabia a powerful gastronomic region in Eastern Europe,” says winemaker Vladimir Palariev.

Thanks to Bessarabia’s unique terroir – a lot of sun, strong winds and location in the middle of steppe allows to make wines as natural as possible. That allows grapes to maintain varrietal purity.

Frumushinka-Nova vineyards occupy almost 10 hectares of land. Varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon as well as local Sukholymanskyi white, Citron Magarach (Citronny Magaracha) and Ukraine’s flagship Odesa Black are grown at the vineyard.

“Our winemaking is about quality, traceability and the use of modern principles of sustainability. Our vines are not treated with herbicides and pesticides, and in technology we also use only organic approaches to wine protection,” says Palariev.

The winemaker

Vladimir Palariev is a Ukrainian winemaker who has graduated Odesa National Academy of Food Technologies obtaining the master’s degree in winemaking. Vladimir has learned and practiced winemaking in many wineries around the world. As a result, he has a modern and creative approach to craft wines from both local and international grape varieties.

Flagship winery in Zakarpattia region

Ukrainian winery Chizay

Chizay is the flagship winery in the Carpathian mountains, and one of the leading wineries in Ukraine. Wines have been made at the Chizay hills ever since 17. century. Today Chizay has 272 hectares of its own vineyards and its wine are only made from its own harvest.

The Carpathian Terroir is excellent for making quality wines due to its mild climate, hills of volcanic origin, sufficient heat and moisture. Soil, full of minerals and micronutrient elements adds a unique taste to the grapes, and the wine gains a very special nature.

Sustainable development

Chizay Winery is gradually replacing cars and equipment with electric ones and plans to completely replace the entire vehicle fleet. The use of solar energy in the Chateau is under development. The bottling and labelling departments, warehouses and offices will be completely switched to solar energy.

Chateau Chizay vineyards are a healthy ecosystem and also home to fauna – pheasants, hares, foxes, roe deer and other animals live safely on the plantations.

Well-known varieties

Chizay has number of different grape varieties, many of them known all over the world – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc and some very distict in the Pannonian wine region such as Pink Traminer, Rhine Riesling, Muscat Ottonel and Zweigelt.

Chizay Winery is not just a winery but also a complex with wine tasting room, museum, restaurant and a mini-hotel.

Make wine for others, as you would for yourself!

The motto of Father’s Wine tells much about the wines they make – high quality and small batches as you would do for yourself.


The winery was founded in 2010 by Volodymyr Buyachko. He enthusiastically planted experimental saplings, and after a while his debut in wine production was made. His hobby and passion turned out to be a business. After Volodymyr passed away in 2018, his family – wife Nadezhda and children – Taras and Oksana – continue his work.

The winery is located in the Western part of Ukraine – in Ternopil region that has favourable conditions for making white wines; the terroir gives perfect acidity to almost all white varieties. Father’s Wine has Jupiter, Johanniter, Muscat Ottonel, Riesling and Helios white varieties and reds Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Odessa Black (cross of Alicante Bouschet and Cabernet Sauvignon). Harvesting is done by hand.

Currently, the vineyards are about 4.5 hectares but in the near future the winery plans to expand and plant some more white varieties. Today the production is 12.000 bottles per year.

There is news to come as the winemakers are experimenting with Pet-Nat, sparklings, different white varieties and also orange wines. A new tasting area will be also opened shortly.

Last but not least the labels. Bright geometry, a colourful kaleidoscope, an allusion to an ethnic costume, a code of generations… The simplicity and symbolism used on labels present the history of previous generations, connection with the elements and family traditions. Wines by Sergiy Stakhovsky

Ace & W by Stakhovsky – wines from the best Ukrainian tennis player Sergiy Stakhovsky



Stakhovsky decided to engage in winemaking at the end of 2015 – after being exposed to wine culture while competing for Vila Primrose (Bordeaux, France). Sergiy rented 20 hectares of vineyards in Wester part of Ukraine in Zakarpattia reigon and began to cultivate the existing grape varieties Merlot, Saperavi, Rose Traminer, Chardonnay, Riesling, Zweigelt, and Cabernet Sauvignon. For two years the team of Stakhovsky Wines was planting vines, putting pillars, cleaning the parcels and replanting plots. In 2018 the first harvest was send for maturation in French oak barrels.

“As an elite tennis player, I was convinced that alcohol had no place in sporting life,“ says Sergiy Stakhovsky. But all that changed very quickly when he moved to France to the Bordeaux tennis team, Villa Primrose.

Stakhovksy arrived in 2010 in Bordeaux for his first match as the new guy in a team of seven. He was invited to a team dinner in the club restaurant on the first night. All of his teammates were from France or Belgium and their faces lighted up when the bottles were brought in. At that time Stakhovsky had no clue about the wines.

Stakhovsky was also offered a glass of wine, but he politely declined and for this grave offence earned himself the nickname ‘Crazy Ukrainian’ (crazy being a synonym of teetotaler in Bordeaux).

“I cannot say that I started to like the taste of wine straight away, but I completely fell in love with the culture of wine!”, says Stakhovksy.

Stakhovksy wines are made with high-tech equipment from Italy, Germany and France that allows processing grapes in gentle mode. White wines are labelled as “W” and red “Ace”.
